Many pilots first meet the ICAO English Language Proficiency (ELP) test to keep flying internationally — but a lot of us discover, when applying to a new airline, that Level 4 is not always enough. More and more carriers prefer, or require, Level 5 or Level 6. I am an active First Officer who has been through the ELP test, so here is what that means for your career.
Is ICAO Level 4 enough?
Level 4 (Operational) is the minimum required to operate on international flights, and it is valid for three years. It is enough to fly — but on a job application it is only the baseline. Because Level 4 must be renewed every three years, and because it sits at the bottom of the operational range, some airlines treat a higher level as a sign of stronger, more reliable communication.
Why airlines prefer Level 5 or 6
There are a few practical reasons a recruiter likes to see Level 5 (Extended) or Level 6 (Expert):
- Fewer renewals. Level 5 is valid for six years and Level 6 never expires, so there is less administrative risk for the operator.
- Stronger radio communication. A higher level suggests you cope well with non-routine situations and unfamiliar accents — exactly what matters on the frequency.
- A clear signal. When many applicants hold Level 4, a Level 5 result helps you stand out.
Some airlines and cadet programmes now set Level 5 as a hiring minimum, so it is worth checking the requirement before you apply.
Level 4 vs 5 vs 6 for your career
In short: Level 4 is valid for three years, Level 5 for six years, and Level 6 does not expire. For a full breakdown of the levels and how they are assessed, see ICAO Level 4, 5 & 6 explained.
How to move from Level 4 to Level 5
The jump to Level 5 is usually about consistency across the six ICAO criteria — especially comprehension, fluency and interaction under pressure. Practise real radio (ATC) exchanges, describe aviation scenes without hesitating, and hold a natural conversation about abnormal situations rather than reciting set phrases. Our ELP study materials and real exam reports from pilots show what a higher-scoring answer actually looks like.
Frequently asked questions
Do airlines require ICAO Level 5?
Some do, and many prefer it. Requirements vary by airline and country, so always check the specific job posting.
Is Level 4 enough to get a pilot job?
Level 4 meets the legal minimum to fly internationally, but on a competitive application a higher level can be an advantage or even a requirement.
How long does ICAO Level 5 last?
Six years, compared with three years for Level 4. Level 6 never expires.
Can I upgrade from Level 4 to Level 5?
Yes. Your level reflects your performance on the day, so with preparation you can be re-assessed at a higher level.
